Ready to pop the question? Then you’ll need an engagement ring. Diamond engagement rings are the most traditional choice, one that will make any woman cry tears of joy. Before you choose an engagement ring for your love though, you should make sure you know her style and you should learn more about the various diamond shapes you can choose from.
Here’s our quick guide on loose diamond shapes to help you decide, though don’t forget that clarity, color, and carat are also important to consider in the cut. You’ll choose the cut first, one that exudes lit from within brilliance, and then decide which shape you’ll present to your love.
- Round
By and large, round is the most popular of diamond engagement ring shapes. It has one of the most brilliant appearances and is a classic for a reason. Even a diamond that is smaller in carats may be more expensive and valuable in this shape. It’s certainly going to retain its value and is a beautiful, not to mention wise investment. - Square/Princess Cut
Often called the ‘princess cut,’ this is the second most popular diamond engagement ring choice. It’s a modern style, featuring a square design in a brilliant cut. The corners are pointed and because of this, it can be more prone to damage if its in an elevated setting. This is certainly something to think of if the woman you love is active or uses her hands for work. - Cushion
When famous people get engaged, they often choose the cushion cut for their fancy diamond engagement rings. It’s big and sometimes has a fancy color. The shape features rounded corners plus has larger facets which boost radiance. They can be rounded-square or rounded-rectangular, and sometimes something in between. The cushion cut brings much clarity and is an absolute dazzler. - Emerald
Traditionally rectangular, the emerald shape has a special facet arrangement. It’s cut with parallel facets which give it a special optical appearance. It’s large and open on the top with step-like cuts following through that bring out the clarity. The clean lines are sophisticated and absolutely elegant. - Marquise
If budget is a concern, marquise might be an option to entertain. This loose diamond shape can maximize carat weight which means you wind up having a diamond that looks much larger than it is. It still looks impressive and stunning without costing a fortune. - Oval
Oval is like the marquise shape for creating a look that’s bigger than the weight. It offers another shape for your consideration when you want to present her with something spectacular that holds its value. - Pear
Pear shapes are unique for having one rounded end and one pointed end. But the trouble here is that many disagree about which way to wear it. Some say the pointed end should point toward the tip of the finger for a more slender look. - Heart
You can also choose a heart shape, though it’s a style that most people either really love or really hate. It’s a great choice for large stones though. We recommend not doing it on a smaller stone as it will come out with a pear shape which will lose the heart effect.
